Peñiscola

I was looking for a cool place near Barcelona to spend our last couple of nights and Peñiscola was a perfect match (at least if you have a sense of adventure above all else)! It is a typical Mediterranean coastal town that still holds its ancient charm. We realized it is a popular tourist destination, likely in part to its castle dating back to the 13th century.

Peníscola, along Spain's Costa del Azahar, is about 100 miles south of Barcelona

Peñiscola reminded Jeremy of France's Mont St. Michel; it reminded me of an empty Dubrovnik.

Many movies and television shows have been filmed here, due to the authentic medieval style of the castle, including - to no surprise - Game of Thrones.

Peñiscola was a double for Meereen in Season 6 of Game of Thrones

One of its main attractions is its old town with narrow streets, whitewashed houses and the impressive Castillo del Papa Luna

The downside to staying on the rocky fortress is its lack of modern conveniences like WiFi reception, air conditioning, and the crowds that swarm here all night. "I can't believe they were up til 4am," commented Jeremy after the first night. I guess you could say it was as authentic of a medieval experience as it gets.

With the humidity at 85% Chris describes it, "we're basically just swimming in water." It (the heat) was miserable particularly because there is no air flow. Kate vetoes Peñiscola from our list of retirement cities. Jeremy votes to sleep in the airport tonight.

Jeremy joined Chris and I for our late night photography outing

Sitting down for a cappuccino at 8am, at first I was miffed that the guy in the only oceanfront table was instead watching the tv above my head - until I realized what he (and everyone else in the bar) was watching. At the same instant I sat down, Pamplona's Running with the Bull's rocket kicked off the first run of the 9-day festival - reminding us of the fantastic time we had there in 2015.

Peñiscola is known for its beaches. People lined the shore as far as you could see.

Well, it's a wrap! We had a great last day and a fun evening full of laughing and enjoying our family time together.

Our perfect last night in Spain
